Hello, little one. It's Mumma. I have a story for you.

This is a true story. It happened in our own India.

On the coast of Kerala, there is a small village called Thumba. Tall coconut trees sway there. The sea wind blows soft and salty. Waves roll onto the sand all day long. Whoosh... whoosh...

In Thumba, close to the sea, stood a church. It was called St Mary Magdalene Church. The people of Thumba loved their church. It was their quiet place to pray.

Far away, a man named Vikram Sarabhai had a big dream. He wanted India to send its own rockets up into the sky. He had a team of young scientists. They were bright and full of hope.

But they needed a place to work, near the sea. And Thumba was just the right place.

The church stood right there. The bishop of that area was Bishop Peter Bernard Pereira. The scientists came to talk with him.

The bishop listened. The village people listened too. Their church was very dear to them. But they could also see the big dream, a dream for the whole country.

So the bishop and the people of Thumba said yes. They gave their church to the scientists.

Kind hearts make room.

Now the scientists worked inside the church. Where people once sat in quiet rows, there were now tables, papers and tools.

Do you know how some rocket parts were carried? On bicycles! Bicycles rolled along the sandy roads, ring, ring, carrying parts of a rocket.

The young team worked day after day. They checked every small part. They helped each other. Slowly, slowly, the rocket was ready.

Then came a very special day. It was 21 November 1963.

The rocket stood tall near the sea. Everyone waited. The sea wind blew. The waves rolled in, whoosh... whoosh...

Then, whoooosh! The rocket rose up, up, up into the sky. It was India's very first rocket launch. And it happened in little Thumba.

It all began because a village shared its church. Kind hearts make room.

Today, that old church by the sea is a space museum. People come with their families to see it. They walk where the first young scientists worked. They look at the rockets, and they dream big dreams of their own.

The coconut trees still sway in Thumba. The waves still roll onto the sand. And this true story of sharing still makes India smile.

Kind hearts make room.

The moral
“When we share, big things become possible.”

Talk to your baby

The people of Thumba made room for a big dream. Kind hearts make room for big dreams. My heart has made the sweetest room for you, little one.

Say this aloud, slowly, or in your own words.

I love you, little one. You are safe. We are together.
