Garbh Sanskar shlokas to chant for you and your baby.

For thousands of years, Indian families have welcomed a baby with sound — the shlokas and mantras of Garbh Sanskar. Vedic families recited verses for the womb. In the hair-parting ceremony (Seemantham), musicians sang for the mother-to-be. Ayurveda says a pregnant woman should hear pleasant sounds and be treated kindly. Today, science shows part of this is true: your baby starts to respond to sound in mid-pregnancy, comes to recognise the sound of your voice in the last months, and prefers your voice after birth.

A verse to begin with

असतो मा सद्गमय ।तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।मृत्योर्मा अमृतं गमय ॥

Lead Me from Darkness to Light

Lead me from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality.

  • When babies in the womb start to respond to sound

    What it found
Babies in the womb were first seen to respond to a sound played on the mother's belly at about 19 weeks, and by 27 weeks almost all of them responded to low-pitched sounds.
    What it doesn't show
It tested simple beeps (pure tones), not voices, music or chanting, so it does not show that a baby understands words or gains anything from hearing shlokas, stories or music.

  • Recognising the mother's voice before birth

    What it found
Near the end of pregnancy, babies' heart rates went up when they heard a recording of their own mother reading and went down for a stranger's voice, which suggests they can tell their mother's voice apart before birth.
    What it doesn't show
It does not show that babies understand words or that hearing your voice improves their health or development, and it was a lab test with a loud recording held near the belly, not everyday talking.

  • Newborns prefer their mother's voice

    What it found
In a small study, newborns only a few days old changed how they sucked so they could hear their own mother's voice more often than another woman's, showing they prefer their mother's voice from the first days of life.
    What it doesn't show
It did not test anything done during pregnancy, so it does not prove the preference was learned in the womb, and it does not show that talking, reading or chanting in pregnancy makes a baby healthier, smarter or more closely bonded.

Shloka chanting is a spiritual and emotional practice. It supports but never replaces regular pregnancy check-ups, scans, tests, iron and folic acid, good food and your doctor's advice. If you have bleeding, pain, leaking fluid, reduced baby movements, severe headache, swelling or any worry, contact your doctor or hospital at once. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, ask your doctor before starting any breathing or yoga practice. Feeling low or anxious most days is common and treatable; please tell your doctor.
