The Story of Your Name
Talk with your baby · 2 min read · Week 24
A mother shares the names on the family's list, and what each one means.
Hello, little one. It's Mumma. I have a story for you.
Little one, we are choosing your name. It is a big, happy job.
We have a list. It is on a paper stuck to the fridge. Everyone keeps adding to it.
The first name on the list is [first name on our list]. It means [its meaning]. I love how soft it sounds when I whisper it to you.
[Papa's name] likes [second name on our list]. It means [its meaning]. Papa says it slowly, like a little song.
Nani has a favourite too. She wants [third name on our list]. It means [its meaning]. She says it holds a piece of our family.
Dadi says a good name must be easy to call from the gate. So she calls out every name, loud and clear. We all laugh.
A name is the first gift we give.
Some nights, I say the names to you, one by one. I wait to see if you move. Sometimes you give a little kick. Maybe that is your vote!
Every name on the list fits you. It does not matter which one we pick. Each one was chosen with love.
A name is the first gift we give.
Soon we will choose. Maybe I will know when I first see your face. Then your name will go everywhere with you. To school, to friends, to faraway places.
A name is the first gift we give. And every time someone calls it, our love will go with it.
“A name carries a family's love.”
Talk to your baby
So many names, and every one was chosen with love. Your name will carry our love. Wherever it goes, we go with you.
Say this aloud, slowly, or in your own words.
I love you, little one. You are safe. We are together.
