Stories & shlokas

Why reading aloud to your bump matters

From the middle of pregnancy your baby may start to hear sounds. The rhythm and warmth of your voice matter more than the words.

What your baby hears

Babies in the womb may start to respond to sound from about 19 weeks, and by the third trimester most react to low sounds. Sound reaches your baby muffled, as if through water. Your own voice travels differently from every other sound: it arrives through your body as well as the air, so it may be one of the clearest things your little one hears.

That is why Garbh Sanskar has always placed the mother's voice at the centre. The shlokas, the lullabies, the stories told to the bump — long before anyone measured a heartbeat, families understood that a calm, familiar voice is the first gift. Studies show that newborns prefer their mother's voice to another woman's from their first days.

Your baby isn't listening for the plot. Your baby is listening for you.

Finding your five minutes

You don't need a quiet room or a perfect routine. Most mothers find a moment that already exists in the day and gently attach reading to it:

  • The few minutes after you sit down with your evening tea.
  • Just before sleep, when the house is quiet and you can feel the baby move.
  • On a slow Sunday morning, with someone close to you reading a page too.

Missed a day? Simply begin again tomorrow. The habit is built in weeks, not in any single evening.

What to read (and what not to worry about)

Anything you enjoy reading slowly. A short story, a shloka with its meaning, a page of a book you loved as a child. If it makes you smile and your breathing settles, that calm is the point. There is no right book, and no need to read for long.

A small ritual to try tonight

Find a comfy spot, rest a hand on your bump, and read one of our stories slowly. When you finish, say two or three lines to your baby in your own words. That's it — you've done Garbh Sanskar today.
