When to Start Garbh Sanskar? It's Never Too Late
Week 6 or week 36? Garbh Sanskar can begin in any trimester. What each stage looks like, and how to start in five minutes.

Meera was 26 weeks pregnant when she first heard the words Garbh Sanskar.
She was at a baby shower in London. One friend said she had started at week 6. Another said her mother began before she was even pregnant.
Meera smiled and nodded. But on the drive home, one thought kept coming back: have I already missed it?
That night she searched: when to start Garbh Sanskar? If you're asking the same question, here is the short answer.
You can start Garbh Sanskar in any week of pregnancy. Today is a good day to begin.
Now let's look at it slowly, one stage at a time.

When should you start Garbh Sanskar?
Garbh Sanskar simply means spending calm, loving time with your baby during pregnancy. You read, sing, listen to music, pray or talk to your bump.
Because it's about calm and connection, there is no deadline. Some families like to begin early. Others begin in the middle, or near the end. All of these are fine.
In Hindi, people often ask, "Garbh Sanskar kab shuru karein?" It means the same thing, and the answer is the same too: start whenever you're ready.
Can you start before pregnancy?
Some families like to begin while they're planning a baby. They build calm habits early, like reading, gentle music or a few quiet minutes each day. There are even shlokas for the months before pregnancy.
That's a nice idea, but it isn't a must. If you're already pregnant, you haven't missed anything.
The first trimester (weeks 1 to 12)
The first months can feel heavy. Many mothers feel tired, and some days just getting through work is enough. So start small:
- Two minutes of soft music before sleep
- One line of thanks in a notebook
- A short, happy story read just for yourself
This stage is mostly about you feeling calm. That's a beautiful start. If you'd like a verse to begin with, try our first-trimester shlokas.
The second trimester (weeks 13 to 26)
Many mothers get a little energy back now, so it's a lovely time to make it a daily habit.
Here's something sweet: the American Academy of Pediatrics says babies start to hear sounds inside your body, like your heartbeat, at around 18 weeks. So this is a good time to start using your voice:
- Say good morning to your bump
- Read a short story aloud
- Pick one song and make it your baby's song
For ready-made ideas, our read-aloud stories are sorted by trimester.
The third trimester (weeks 27 to 40)
This is where Meera was, and where many mothers feel they're too late.
They're not. By around 27 to 29 weeks, babies can hear some sounds from outside your body, like your voice.
In a 2014 University of Florida study, mothers said the same short rhyme aloud twice a day from week 28 to week 34. At 38 weeks, their babies still reacted to that rhyme. It doesn't show any later learning benefit, but it does suggest the last few months are a lovely time for your voice to become familiar.
Try this in the third trimester:
- Read one story aloud each evening
- Chant or listen to one calm shloka with its meaning: our third-trimester shlokas are a good place to start
- Write a small letter to your baby once a week
Is it too late in the 8th or 9th month?
No. Not even close.
Five calm minutes in week 36 are still five calm minutes. They still help you slow down, and your baby still hears your voice.
Many parents keep the same story or song going after birth, so it becomes a sweet part of bedtime.
There is no catching up to do. There is only today.
How to start Garbh Sanskar today
You don't need a class, a kit or an hour. Just three tiny steps:
- Pick a time. Morning tea, lunch break or just before bed. The same time each day makes it easy to remember.
- Pick one activity. A story, a shloka, a song or a calm puzzle game. Just one.
- Keep it to five minutes. Short and steady beats long and stressful.

What happened next?
Meera started that same week, at 26 weeks. She felt a bit silly at first, reading a story aloud to her bump in an empty room.
By week 30, it had become her favourite part of the day. Her partner started joining in at weekends, and even picked a lullaby. They sing it badly, which Meera loves.
At the next baby shower, someone asked when she had started. She smiled and said, "I started when I was ready. That was the right time."
Yours is too.
