Hanuman Chalisa in pregnancy

Can you read the Hanuman Chalisa while you are pregnant? Yes. Many Indian mothers recite it every day, from the first weeks to the last, and grandmothers often suggest it for courage. A few families have their own customs about reciting it. If yours does, follow them. Listening to the Chalisa, or asking someone at home to read it to you, counts just as much.

The full Chalisa has forty chaupais, with dohas at the start and the end. On this page you'll find five of its best-loved lines, each with its meaning: the opening prayer for strength, wisdom and knowledge; two lines for fear at night and for days you feel unwell; a line many families repeat outside the labour room; and the closing doha. If the whole Chalisa feels long, especially in the third trimester, one line said slowly 3 or 11 times is plenty. Sit with your back supported and breathe naturally.

A line like 'Nasai rog harai sab peera' is a prayer for strength, not a medicine. Go to every check-up, and keep taking the tablets and care your doctor gives you. If you have bleeding, pain or any worry, call your doctor straight away. Don't wait to finish a prayer. Read our disclaimer
