Shlokas for a mother's health, and bhojan mantras for meals

These verses are for you, the mother. Pregnancy asks a lot of your body, and Indian families have long answered with a small prayer of thanks: before a meal, in the morning sun, or on a day you feel unwell. Here you will find the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, which praises Shiva as the one who nourishes. Annapurna and Brahmarpanam are two well-loved bhojan mantras to say before you eat. There is also a mantra to Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, and a few very short lines for tired days.

You can chant these in any week. Many mothers pick one verse and say it before each meal, or before the tablets their doctor has given them, as a quiet pause in the day. Read the meaning first, then chant slowly and breathe naturally. Each verse is shown in Devanagari with an easy transliteration, and the practice notes on this page cover most of them.

These are prayers of gratitude, not treatment. Your doctor's advice on food, supplements and medicines always comes first. If something feels wrong, call your doctor straight away. Read our disclaimer

Health and nourishment

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanam, urvarukam iva bandhanan mrityor mukshiya mamritat

Rig Veda 7.59.12

Meaning

We worship the three-eyed Lord, fragrant, who increases nourishment. As a ripe cucumber is freed from its vine, may I be freed from death, not from immortality.

Why we suggest this

Shiva is praised as 'pushti-vardhana', the one who nourishes and helps us grow. Many families also see a birth picture here: a ripe fruit coming away easily when its time is full (our reflection, not the classical meaning).

What you can expect

One of the most comforting health prayers in India. Chant slowly, never breathless.

How to practise
11 or 21 times, slowly

Why we suggest this

Good food matters a lot in pregnancy. This verse turns each meal into a thankful pause.

What you can expect

Slower, more mindful eating, which can also help with heartburn and nausea. For heartburn or nausea, ask your doctor.

Parvati Is My Mother, Shiva My Father

माता च पार्वती देवी पिता देवो महेश्वरः ।बान्धवाः शिवभक्ताश्च स्वदेशो भुवनत्रयम् ॥

Goddess Parvati is my mother, Lord Shiva my father, the devotees are my family, and the three worlds are my home.

Why we suggest this

A warm verse about belonging, especially for a mother far from her own family.

What you can expect

A feeling of being held by a larger family.

Gratitude for food

brahmarpanam brahma havir brahmagnau brahmana hutam, brahmaiva tena gantavyam brahma-karma-samadhina

Why we suggest this

One of the best-known Indian mealtime prayers.

Why we suggest this

A reason to step into morning sunlight for a few minutes.

What you can expect

A fresh start to the day.
