Savitribai's Slate
True story · 3 min read · Week 20
Savitribai Phule learns to read and opens a school for girls in Pune.
Hello, little one. It's Mumma. I have a story for you.
Long ago, in 1831, a girl named Savitribai was born. Her home was a small village in Maharashtra.
In those days, most girls did not go to school. They did not learn to read or write. Many people believed that books were not for girls.
When Savitribai was still young, she was married to Jyotirao Phule. Jyotirao believed something simple and strong. He believed that girls should learn too.
So, at home, he began to teach her. We can picture her with a slate in her lap. Slowly, carefully, she learned her first letters. Then words. Then whole lines. One letter at a time.
Savitribai loved learning. Every new word felt like a small window opening. She kept studying, and she trained to become a teacher.
Then a big dream grew in her heart. What if every girl could learn to read?
In 1848, in Pune, Savitribai and Jyotirao opened a school for girls. It was small. Only a few girls came at first. Savitribai became their teacher. Many people call her India's first woman teacher.
But not everyone was happy. Some people did not want girls to learn. When Savitribai walked to school, they said unkind things. They wanted her to stop.
Savitribai did not stop. She did not shout back. She took a slow breath and walked on. Savitribai kept going, calm and brave.
Every morning, she reached the school. She opened the door. She smiled at her girls. Then she began the lesson, one letter at a time.
Little fingers traced letters. Little voices read words out loud. The girls learned to read. They learned to count. They learned that their minds were bright and strong.
Soon, more girls came. Then more schools opened. Savitribai and Jyotirao kept working, year after year. They believed every child deserved to learn.
Some days were hard. But each morning, Savitribai picked up her books again. Savitribai kept going, calm and brave.
Today, girls all over India walk to school with books in their bags. They sit in classrooms and raise their hands. Some grow up to be teachers. Some become doctors. Some write stories of their own.
Every one of those school bags holds a little of Savitribai's courage. It all began long ago, with one slate and one letter at a time.
“Learning opens every door.”
