The Kite and the String
New story · 3 min read · Week 21
On a breezy evening, a kite learns that its string helps it fly higher.
Hello, little one. It's Mumma. I have a story for you.
It is a breezy evening. We are standing on the terrace. The sun is low and golden. A soft wind plays with my dupatta.
In my hands, there is a little red kite. Its string rolls out from a wooden spool. Let us hold it gently... and let it go.
Whoosh... The wind lifts the kite. Up it goes, a little... and then a little more.
The kite flutters and dances. Then it whispers down the string. "String, why do you hold me? Let me go free. Then I can fly to the clouds."
The string answers softly. "Little kite, I do not hold you back. I hold you steady. Lean on me, and see what happens."
The kite is not sure. But it trusts the string. It leans back, just a little.
And the wind catches it. Swoosh... The kite rises higher.
Higher and higher, softly, softly.
"Oh!" says the kite. "When I lean on you, the wind lifts me up."
"Yes," says the string. "Without me, you would drift and tumble. With me, you can face the wind. I am not a chain. I am a hand to hold."
The kite smiles. It sways left... and right... and climbs again. Past the neem tree. Past the water tank. Up, up, near the first little cloud.
Higher and higher, softly, softly.
Down below, I hold the string. It is thin, but it is strong. Through it, I can feel the kite. A gentle tug, like a hello. Tug... tug... I am here... I am here...
The birds are flying home. The sky turns pink, then purple. The kite floats calm and happy, high above the rooftops.
Little one, one day you will fly too. You will try new things. You will see new places. And I will be right here, holding the string. Not to keep you down. Only to keep you steady.
Higher and higher, softly, softly.
Now the light is fading. Slowly, slowly, I wind the string. The kite comes gliding down, light as a leaf, into my hands. It is home. It is safe.
Let us breathe in the cool evening air... and breathe out... We are here, together, held by love.
“Loving support helps us fly higher.”
Talk to your baby
The string helped the kite fly higher. I will hold the string so you can fly. Wherever you go, my love goes with you.
Say this aloud, slowly, or in your own words.
I love you, little one. You are safe. We are together.
