Hello, little one. It's Mumma. I have a story for you.

Shh. Let us listen together, little one. What do you hear in there?

One big sound in your world is my heartbeat. Dhak-dhak, dhak-dhak. It is with you all day and all night, like a soft drum. When I walk, it beats a little faster. When I rest, it slows down again.

Then there is a soft whoosh. It sounds like wind in the trees. That is the sound of my body sending you everything you need. Whoosh, whoosh. It never takes a break.

Sometimes you hear a funny grumble. Grrr-urrr! That is just my tummy. Maybe it is asking for lunch. Maybe it is just being noisy. My tummy likes to talk too.

And then there is my voice.

My voice reaches you in a special way. It travels through my own body, all the way to you. So it may be the clearest sound you hear. When I talk to the family, it reaches you. When I hum in the kitchen, it reaches you. When I whisper at night, it reaches you too.

Dhak-dhak, dhak-dhak. Whoosh, whoosh. Grrr-urrr. And Mumma, talking and humming. That is your little world of sounds.

Outside, many more sounds are waiting for you. Birds in the morning. A temple bell. Rain on the roof. Laughter at the dinner table.

But for now, you have these. My heartbeat, close and steady. Dhak-dhak, dhak-dhak. And my voice, saying hello.

The moral
“A mother's voice is a baby's first music.”

Talk to your baby

Dhak-dhak, dhak-dhak. That is my heart, right next to you. Of all the sounds, I hope you love my voice. I will keep talking to you, every day.

Say this aloud, slowly, or in your own words.

I love you, little one. You are safe. We are together.
